Project: Pebble Bed Modular Demonstration Reactor (EPCM)

SNC-Lavalin Nuclear’s Role: SNC-Lavalin Nuclear is acting as the EPCM subcontractor for the PBMR Demonstration Power Plant. The current schedule is to start construction in 2007 and complete the demonstration plant to be completed by 2010. The first commercial PBMR modules are planned for 2015.
The PBMR is a High Temperature Reactor (HTR), with a closed-cycle, gas turbine power conversion system. It is mainly comprised of a steel pressure vessel which holds the enriched uranium dioxide fuel encapsulated in graphite spheres. The system is cooled with helium and heat is converted into electricity through a turbine.
